This styled photo shoot shows the easy and intimacy of a “van life” pop-up elopement in nature. We wanted to show how easy, intimate, stress free and stylish an elopement wedding day could be. We picked a remote field outside of the hills of Horsethief Butte for the actual ceremony location, while the couple’s portraits mainly took place while hiking around Horsethief Butte Park. The idea for the couple’s portraits was that a couple could bring a picnic, take their trusty dog and climb around in the natural areas of the park for some incredible photos. This area gets a lot more sun than closer to Portland and it feels like a world away because of the vastly different climate and scenery. At certain locations, the rocks form an Icelandic vibe. The wind provided more drama for the flowing hand dyed silk ribbons on the bride’s bouquet, created by Small Yard Flowers. It was only 40 degrees out and the wind was blowing, so our models were total troopers. The models are our friends who were married in July by Emily Sterling of Rooted & Wild. Their love and compatibility shine through in Donny Mays photography. You can’t even tell that they were freezing most of the time! They love to hike and adventure with their dog Duke in their daily lives together, as well as estate sale hunt for vintage goods, so this was a perfect setting for their love story. Armed with only a van, stunning florals and some flowing fabric, we created a ceremony altar on the back tailgate of the van. The ceremony was intimate, with the couple exchanging words reflecting on their 4 months of marriage since their actual wedding ceremony by Rooted & Wild. The dining set-up featured vintage camp chairs, a Coleman cooler, a bottle of Argyle sparkling wine, and a mini cake from Back to Eden with vibrant florals by Small Yard Flowers. We think this is how weddings can be: Intimate, a little bit wild, affordable and a true reflection of the couple’s love story.

What did you learn?

Attitude is the most important thing. It would have been easy for any of us to say, you know what this weather stinks - let's wrap it up. Instead every single one of us stayed positive and came away with more powerful images than had the weather been pleasant. I have so much gratitude to every one involved for keeping spirits high in such adversity - everyone killed it!

What made you cry?

During the ceremony the couple took time to reflect with each other on their first 4 months of marriage. Joe talked about this morning ritual they have had since getting married where every single morning when the alarm goes off they hit the snooze button and cuddle. He said his favorite days were 3 and 4 snooze days...such a simple yet powerful little ritual for the two that really shows their exuberance and love for one another.
