Washington has deserts too stylized shoot
When folks think of Washington State, desert is definitely not the first thing that comes to mind. Most people think of towering pines, clouds, mountains, and rain (all of which we have in spades, by the way). What most people don't know is that smack dab in the middle of Washington is the most amazing desert. (Ok, technically it's called a scab-land...but, I promise it's much prettier than it sounds.) For today's post, we're really excited to bring this desert stylized shoot from LaYoung Photography and her team!
So I've been dreaming of shooting out the area for a long, long time, and I stumbled on this location while on a random Sunday drive with my husband; we were wandering down these empty back roads when we found this unmarked, beautiful spot overlooking this fantastic canyon and we were both awe struck. Naturally, I was thrilled when I was able to get such an amazing team of vendors willing to follow me on a road trip to nowhere!
When I was first dreaming up this elopement shoot, I knew that I wanted the bride's dress to be elegant and ornate, so the black and gold piece from Rent the Runway was a perfect fit. The more I looked though, the more I loved the idea of minimalist and elegant, so the two dresses we chose were really the touch stone for creating the aesthethic: mixing gold, edgy tones with modern simplicity. Since this particular desert is pretty short on actual cactuses, but has a ton of wonderful basalt formations, we chose to focus on geodes, crystals, and different stone textures as our main inspiration for the shoot.
Though we had hoped for the typically sunny weather of the region for our shoot day, we were almost stuck in a torrential lightning and thunder storm. Nature threw us all a bit of a curveball, and huge, threatening thunder-clouds were over the horizon the whole time we were shooting. The tension in the light and clouds gave the images a darker mood that I was definitely not expecting, but I really loved.
